The President’s Award community service section aims at learning how to give useful service to others.
On this particular note, the President’s Award Dedan Kimathi University Of Technology in conjunction with the St. John Ambulance -DeKUT unit, undertook a cleanup in Nyeri Town on Saturday,13th February 2016 starting 9.30 am to 1.00 pm. The activity was under the supervision of the County Government Sanitation department, headed by Mr. Edward and also Mr. Juma. During this activity we were joined by our Assistant Patron, Mr. Bernard Hinga.
The cleanup exercise commenced at the Kamukunji Stadium where the Sanitation Department is located . We were divided into five groups. Group 1 to 3 covered Route A starting Kimathi Stadium-Provincial General Hospital-Asian Quarters while Group 4 to 5 covered Route B starting, Kimathi Stadium-YMCA Nyeri-National Oil-Asian Quarters.
We were provided with gloves and plastic bags by the County Government. The County Government refuse trucks accompanied us on both routes for purposes of emptying our refuse which would be ferried to the Nyeri Dumpsite at Asian Quarters. The peak of the event was at the Nyeri Dumpsite at Asian Quarters.
Before closure of business for the day, Mr. Edward gave an assessment of the day’s activity. He was delighted to host the students in participation of clean up exercise .He however sighted the challenges that the County Government is experiencing in regard to waste management and urged students to maintain our environment and also come up with ways of recycling of waste. Our Assistant Patron Mr. Bernard Hinga was delighted to be part of the cleanup exercise .He also appreciated members of staff who had joined us in the activity, who included the University Security Officer Mr. Steve a member of St. John Ambulance.
